The business district, as well as the population of
Vining has changed considerably over the years.
With the loss of elevators, the railroad and businesses in
Vining over the years, there has also been a decline in the number
of residents. The
current population of Vining is 68, however, Vining serves as a
center for many folks living outside the village limits and on
nearby lakes. A
building formerly housing the village school serves as a Community
Center for activities and Senior Citizen functions.
The children in Vining and in the surrounding area attend
grade school and high school in the nearby city of Henning, MN.
Our mayor is Don Selvaag.
Others serving on the city council are:
Jim Wallevand, Mark Tiede, Adeline Thompson, Diane Lineburg
and Floyd Johnson.
The Vining Volunteer Fire Department was formed in
1960. The first Fire
Chief was Albin Hauberg and Assistant Fire Chief was Ted J.
Waskosky. There were 27 volunteer firemen at that time.
The present fire department’s Fire Chief is Todd Volden,
Glenn Whiting-Assistant Fire Chief, Diane Lineburg-Secretary, and
Marvin Suchy-Treasurer. There
are currently 13 volunteer firemen.
The 1st Response Team of Vining was
formed around in July 1989. The
1st Response Team has 5 certified people consisting of
Glenn Whiting, Jana Kenyon, Marvin Suchy, Diane Lineburg, and
Steven Fiskum.
